At the end of the session I presented at this conference two years ago, I made mention of a new tool that had just been made public 10 days prior: ChatGPT. Two years later, we’ll pick up where we left off: absorbing the lessons from the Great Pivot to online teaching, and trying to wrap our heads around AI. We’ve come to realize that teaching and learning are experiencing a great deal of disruption; with no end in sight to the turmoil, how do we cope? I argue that the way to navigate these choppy seas is to keep our eye on learner engagement. I’ll introduce some new tools and reintroduce some older ones that can facilitate productive and engaged learning (and teaching).
