Abstract

Workshop One: Identifying Online Assessment Strategies

In this workshop, participants were introduced to a variety of online assessment strategies

  • Backward design

    • Where we want students to be at the end of a course

    • How we assess whether they’ve made it to that point

  • Why online closed-book proctored exams may be more trouble than they’re worth

  • Alternatives:

    • Open book and take-home exams

    • Authentic assignments and projects

    • Learning portfolios

Workshop Two: Contextualizing Online Assessment Strategies

In this workshop, participants reflected on their own online assessment strategy for a course they are teaching online or expect to adapt for online delivery

  • Participants were walked through three steps of backward design for their course:

    • Identifying desired learning outcomes

    • Conceptualizing assessments appropriate for measuring the learning outcomes

    • Online-proofing the assessment strategies to ensure academic integrity, fairness, reliability, and efficacy
